AN HISTORIC VISIT TO BEER CAVES

9th DECEMBER 2006

Paul arranged for a group of members to go on an historic visit to the man-made Beer quarry caves in Devon. Historic, because no visitor has ever been allowed there in winter before. A new EU ruling allows visitors in small groups to see the caves but flash photography is not allowed as the high-pitched whine of the camera flash charging up disturbs the large colonies of bats roosting there, among them the very rare Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii). This is why some of our collection are less than well-lit, but I hope a taste of these remarkable caves can be had from them.

Those of us who visited will never forget the experience, I am sure.
