Dave Whizz's Winter Solstice
21st December, 2008
We all met up at a tiny chapel on a windswept headland, looking forward to a promised sight of awe as the newly-risen sun slashed beams through the chapel window to spill blood-red onto the altar. Sounds great? Yes. But the day was different to that. For a start, Stephanie and I got lost and picked up an equally lost walker, also searching for the chapel. Then we strayed onto a slippery mud track only to get stuck, but military training got the better of me and we soon popped out again. We finally found the chapel by asking a local man with his dogs:
"Do you know where the chapel is?"
"Yes." Stoney silence . . .
"Would you tell us where it is please?"
Needless to say, we arrived before the cutoff time but the sky was very overcast and bright by then, so any chance of a red sunrise was lost before it began. So we repaired to a cafe in Corfe Castle, in the shadow of the great monument itself, and had a glorious Full English to wash away the disappointment.
Thanks David for an interesting morning.
