Kingcombe Meadows Walk

18th March 2007

The weather had been beautifully mild, sunny and springlike until the night before our walk. Then it all changed, with forecasters predicting a big drop in temperature, wintry showers and even snow!  Nevertheless, a small number of the more hardy Fulcrum members decided to risk it, one even reporting a brief fall of snow nearby earlier that morning.

We set off trying to follow a route given in a book of walks, but soon gave up on that and resorted to the much more reliable OS map to find our way.  Our walk took us through secluded woodlands, by clear trickling streams and into open fields.

The views from high ground were excellent, but the wind up there was chilly!  We saw deer, badger setts (but not the occupants) and found a couple of fields full of "emmet tumps" - nobody took up the challenge to sit on them!

Crossing the River Hooke was interesting.  Fortunately there were large stepping stones in the fast moving water.  There was also a ford nearby, which was just a little too deep for anyone without wellies, but that didn't seem to bother the cows, who preferred to cross that way.

The weather wasn't as bad as predicted. We didn't get wet and there was very little mud. The scenery was lovely and (most important) we managed to find a sheltered sunny spot to eat our picnic in comfort!
