PURBECK MAP READING COURSE

23rd September, 2007

Barry designed a led a very popular and comprehensive map reading course deep into the Isle of Purbeck.

He writes:

Hi All,

better late than never I guess.

I had been asked to run a map reading session, so that members who go on walks could take a map and see exactly where we were going and maybe have a bit of input.

On the day in question, Penny, Dave, together with Cathy, Dorothy and Ellie (new members) met up with myself at the car park North of Worth Matravers. Thats towards the top of the map :)

The idea was a walk and talk giving everyone a chance to do a little map reading or follow where we were going and show what the map sysmbols represented 'on the ground'. Worth area is ideal for this as there is plenty of info shown. Ellie left us at that point, but it was nice to meet her and she came to Richard's Curry evening later that week.

We walked down to the duckpond (more about that later) and then followed the footpaths east then south to the coast and follwed the coastpath back. On the way I explained about the different ways that footpaths, bridlepaths and tracks can be shown and we even discovered a new path not shown on the map.

All the group seemed to get something out of it (I hope they did anyway) and we deceided to go into the tea shop for lunch. At this point .... Dave decided to wash his boots in the duck pond. Unfortunately he decided to do it where it was rather slippery and sat down! The problem was each time he tried to get up he slipped a bit more! He was rather more than damp when he got out and Penny and I walked back up to the car park with him and he went home.

Tea down in the village was very welcome and we discussed what we had done and a few other things.
