Archaeological Walk

14 July 2007

" Lycsombe Bottom "

Today's walk at Lyscombe Bottom was a bit scenic to say the least.

Two Dorset county staff, Steve and Demelza, led it and about 30 people turned up ... no not Fulcrum members, which were Penny, David and myself.

The walk was about 4 miles with a not so steep climb up to the chalk ridge that encircles the coombe. Along the ridge the views varied from Portland and across to Hardy's Monument in the west to as far as Poole Harbour glinting in the distance. At the top of the ridge we walked through a row of trees to find views across Blackmoor Vale to the Mendips in one direction and down to the Quantock Hills and Exmoor in the other.

The archaeology content ranged from prehistoric tumuli burial mounds to an old chapel that was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries but has been rebuilt. Demelza talked extensively about the landscape, plants and the way the land is being conserved while Steve is the archaeology expert. Penny took the photos.

see you all soon,

Barry
